It's fall and apples are ripe for the picking. Here's a simple cookie recipe that you can whip up with your kids without even getting out the mixer.

Applesauce cookies
Cookies:
3/4 cup shortening
1 cup packed brown sugar
1 egg
1/2 cup applesauce
2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour, sifted
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
3/4 teaspoon salt
3/4 teaspoon cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
1 cup raisins
1/2 cup chopped walnuts

Topping:
1/4 cup granulated sugar
1 teaspoon cinnamon

1. Preheat over to 375F.
2. Combine shortening, brown sugar and egg. Stir in applesauce. Combine dry ingredients. Add to shortening mixture. Fold in raisins, nuts. Drop by tablespoons onto a greased baking sheet.
3. Combine sugar and cinnamon for topping in small bowl and sprinkle on cookies.
4. Bake 10 to 12 minutes. Makes 32.
