I had both, but used the cover for the infant carrier the most. It is very convenient and because it's so easy to unzip, you know the baby isn't going to get too hot while you run in the store, etc. I saved the snow suit for playing outside or just kept it in the car, in case of emergency.
Yes, this is true for transporting your child. The problem is that a snow suit makes it very difficult to fit the car seat straps securely around your child's body. I attended a car seat training at Babies R Us, and one of the girls in attendance told the story of her client who was transporting her child in an infant car seat. The car was rammed into by another car, and when the accident was over, the child had been ejected from the car seat, leaving the snow suit behind.
Land's End makes a great snuggle suit to take babies out in ... http://www.landsend.com/pp/FleeceCarSeatCover~137028_-1.html?bcc=y&...
I had a car seat cover for my son and LOVED it! I received comments on it everywhere we went. Mine was a hand-me-down but here's a similar version they sell at Babies R Us: http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3125436
I am a retired State Trooper and a Paramedic for over 30 years. We always told parent not to think that a child in secure in a car while wearing a snow suit. The shoulder straps do not fit secure enough. Yes, I have seen children ejected when wearing snow suits and the parent thought they were secured. Take time to check every time you put them in the car. A great question!
